D.O.B: 8th September
STAR SIGN: Virgo
HOMETOWN:Northern Territory, Australia
At first glance and in his debut film, this guy seems a real smooth cruiser – slicked back hair and sure of himself with a very attractive girl-swooping style. But in real life, Dan Sultan is anything but the bully Lester he plays in the new Aussie comedy/musical Bran Nue Dae.
The must-see flick follows teenager Willie (Rocky McKenzie) as he finds his way back home to Broome (and to his girl Rosie (played by Miss Jessica Mauboy) after being sent to a strict religious school. His journey home and the whacky characters he meets along the way (cue a crazy hippie (Missy Higgins) and the town drunk (Ernie Dingo) while being chased by Father Benedictus (Geoffrey Rush) teaches Willie a life lesson or two.
Originally from the Northern Territory and now residing in Melbourne, Dan was hand picked to star alongside the stellar cast as Lester – the local singer who is determined to win the heart of Rosie (the bad boy streak teamed with the fact Lester is a hot musician makes for some serious perving moments!)
“I played the bad boy,” Dan says.
“To be acting in a feature film and with that kind of cast, it was pretty unbelievable and daunting. It [the acting scene] was pretty new for me. It was great! I really enjoyed it and it was a great challenge,” he says.
Though he may have been a rookie on the acting front, Dan certainly was no stranger to the microphone. A rising musician, Dan and his guitarist Scott Wilson produced his country/soul/rock n’ roll debut album, Homemade Biscuits in 2006 (mental note: the most romantic thing Dan has ever done for a girl is write a song for her! Awww!) He and his band have toured around Australia appearing at festivals such as Womadelaide, The Byron Bay Blues festival, Port Fairy Folk and the Melbourne Falls Festival (where his music and honest performance captured the heart of our Chief Sub Editor, Kim!). He and his band have supported The Waifs and even the John Butler Trio!
“Performing with The John Butler Trio was pretty cool. They put on a really good show and the crowd is always willing to have a good time and to listen to some music. Although not that many people might’ve heard of us, people were still willing to let loose and to have a good time,” Dan says.
And what it like working with DOLLY fave Jess Mauboy?
“Jess is great. She’s a really good girl and I’m just really proud of her. She’s just really lovely and normal, cool and really talented,” Dan says.
We also grilled Dan on all things girls (don’t ever say we don’t love you!)
“I like a good girl. She has to be smart, bright and someone fun and you feel comfortable with. My idea of a perfect first date would be hanging out with someone who you feel nice and comfortable around. It doesn’t matter what you do, just keep it simple. That’s usually a pretty good first date!” Dan says.
Is there anything hotter than a laid back muso? We’re tipping this cool-as-cool musician to be the next big thing on the music scene. Watch this space.
Check out Bran Nue Dae in cinemas NOW and Dan’s soulful and honest new record Get Out While You Can is available in all good music stores.
